On November 9, 2019 at 6:00AM, I wrote the business plan for what would become SnapTutor.
Writing has always been something I thoroughly enjoy. You could say I view writing as something competitive, an academic sport of sorts. At this point, I was obsessed with challenging myself to write the best paper in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of editing just for fun. It was typical for me to hammer out multiple 10-page papers the night they were due in about 5 hours or less and get top marks.
One evening when I was attending university in Silicon Valley, I got an email from my mother asking if I could proofread an essay my brother had just written. Having just finished an essay of my own, the timing could not be better, I was already in writing mode.
So I sat down, pulled up my brother’s paper and got to work. All corrections were made in the margins in a different color so as to not alter the original paper. By the time I sent the paper back, it was chalk full of annotations. My brother ended up getting an “A” which is optimal. However, though his paper was technically correct, there was no in-depth explanation, because I had not been there to explain my corrections in real time. The WHY factor was missing, a learning opportunity was missed. The “why factor” represented a golden opportunity to not just help K-12 students find tutors, who could connect from anywhere with a stable internet connection in real time, but an opportunity to help current college students monetize what they know. I pulled an all nighter and wrote a business plan. After a lot of development, beta testing, and re-designing, SnapTutor came into fruition.”
